The Alumnae Association of the Philadelphia General Hospital School of Nursing Photo Collection totals over 1,500 photos that span from 1880 to the 1970s. The collection features images of life in the School of Nursing and on the wards and campus of the Philadelphia Almshouse and the Philadelphia General Hospital. Founded in 1885 as the first school of nursing in Philadelphia established on the ideas of Florence Nightingale, the Philadelphia General Hospital School of Nursing enjoyed a long and excellent reputation as one of the nation's major teaching centers for nurses.
The photos offer visual images of the activities engaged in by nurses and other healthcare providers, the buildings and settings used for healthcare delivery, and the patients cared for within the institution. The breadth, depth, and scope of this collection, illuminating the daily life and work of not only nurses, but many others in the hospital community, make it a valuable source on the history of nursing and health care. The entire collection will be available for viewing on a soon-to-be launched University of Pennsylvania Libraries' Schoenberg Center for Electronic Text and Image website.
