The Children's Seashore House at Atlantic City, NJ, was founded in 1872 as a first-of-its kind seaside hospital and was funded by endowments and trusts from wealthy families of the Philadelphia region. The founders thought the convalescence out of the city under proper conditions - a little fresh air, a little sunshine, a period of rest under medical supervision - meant the difference between a happy, normal life and one of suffering. From an archival facility brochure: "Here under the healthful influence of shore sunshine and salt air, and with skilled medical care, the poorer children of the cities and towns are made well again." Watch our video story and see historians and former Seashore House staff recount the purpose of the seaside hospital and the use of the sea environment in caring for children.
